Jaw & Facial Muscles
Gentle, external work around the muscles of the jaw, cheeks, and temples — areas that often hold tension from clenching, concentrating, or stress.
If your jaw feels tight by the afternoon, you notice yourself clenching while you work or drive, or tension seems to settle into your temples, face, neck, and shoulders, focused massage may help address some of the muscular tension involved.
This is unhurried, individualized therapeutic work tailored to what you’re noticing and what feels comfortable to you — including intraoral (inside-the-mouth) jaw work when appropriate.
A few things clients often describe before booking focused jaw and neck work. This is not a checklist or a diagnosis — just common experiences.
Muscles around the jaw and upper body do a great deal of quiet work all day — talking, chewing, concentrating, holding a phone, looking at a screen. When those muscles stay busy, they can start to feel tight and tired. Focused massage is designed to address that muscular tension directly, and may help support relaxation and more comfortable movement.

Slow scalp and temple work that many clients find deeply calming, and that may help reduce the feeling of tightness across the head.
Focused attention to the neck and the tops of the shoulders, where posture, screen time, and stress commonly leave muscles feeling tight.
Therapeutic work through the upper back to address muscular tightness that often accompanies rounded posture and long hours at a desk.
When appropriate, a focused TMJ session may include intraoral techniques in addition to external work around the jaw, face, scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper back. Intraoral work, sometimes referred to by clients as buccal massage, allows access to certain jaw muscles that cannot be reached in the same way externally.
I have been trained in intraoral TMJ-focused massage and have incorporated this work into my massage practice for approximately 22 years. Intraoral techniques are performed with gloves and only with your informed consent. They are never required — if you prefer external work only, your session can be adapted completely around your comfort level.
TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, the joint just in front of each ear that allows the jaw to open, close, and move side to side. What many people casually call “TMJ” can involve discomfort or tension around the jaw and surrounding muscles and structures.
The jaw, face, scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper back sit close together and share a lot of daily work. When one region is holding tension, nearby muscles may feel tight as well. That does not mean one area always causes another — bodies are not that predictable, and jaw or head discomfort can have many different explanations, some of which are outside the scope of massage therapy.
What it does mean is that working these regions together often feels more complete than working one small spot in isolation. Some people also notice that jaw, neck, shoulder, and scalp muscular tightness occurs alongside certain kinds of tension-type headaches. Where that seems to be part of your picture, addressing the muscular tension may be helpful — while any headache that is new, severe, unusual for you, or persistent deserves a look from a healthcare professional.
Every session is a little different. We’ll talk about what you’ve been noticing, where you feel the most tension, and what seems to make it better or worse. From there, I’ll tailor the session to what your body needs that day while staying comfortably within the scope of massage therapy.
This is not a one-size-fits-all massage. It is built around your concerns, your comfort, and your feedback.
You tell me what you are noticing, what makes it better or worse, and what you would like the session to focus on. Nothing is assumed.
Focused does not mean painful. We find a pressure that feels productive to you, and we adjust any time you want it changed.
You remain professionally draped throughout. All work around the jaw, face, scalp, neck, and shoulders is done with your consent, and you can adjust or stop any technique — including intraoral work — at any time.
If an area feels like too much, or you would rather spend the remaining time elsewhere, just say so. The session belongs to you.
The 60 Minute Focused Therapeutic Massage suits one connected tension pattern such as jaw with neck and shoulders. The 90 Minute Signature Therapeutic Massage is my most recommended option when you want full body therapeutic massage with detailed attention to that area. Current session lengths and pricing are listed on the massage page.
Massage can be a helpful part of caring for muscular tension, but some symptoms are better evaluated first by a dentist or healthcare provider. If your jaw or headache symptoms are new, severe, worsening, began after an injury or dental procedure, or include unusual neurological symptoms, please seek appropriate medical or dental guidance before scheduling.
If you are unsure whether this session is right for you, just ask before booking and we will figure it out together.
